We try to keep a wide range of different kinds of mobility equipment to cover as many people’s needs as we can. As well as keeping a range of both three– and four–wheeled scooters we have powered wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs.
Our scooters will suit people over a range of weights‚ right up to 32 stones‚ whilst our power wheelchairs will cover weights up to 23 stones. The majority of our manual wheelchairs will carry people up to 18 stones‚ but we have a couple that are both wider and will carry weights up to 22 stones.
Similarly‚ we consider the controls of our equipment. Our power wheelchairs can be both left or right hand operated‚ and one even has an attendant control for instances where this is the best method of operation. Scooters come with a range of controls‚ some thumb operated and some controlled by the fingers. A couple are switchable from left to right hand operation‚ and have a very light touch for users who have little use in their hands. We also have a number of scooters that are dual–controlled‚ so that people who have limited use in one hand can still use the equipment to get about.
This page contains images of some of our equipment‚ with an indication of its weight limit and its controllability.
Here at Chesterfield and District Shopmobility we have tried to build up a collection of equipment that suits as broad a range of need as possible. What we cannot do‚ however‚ is keep equipment that is very specialist in nature. Some people’s needs are so specific that they have to have very carefully assessed and constructed equipment. It would be difficult for us to keep such equipment unless it were to be used very frequently.
That said‚ we do try to match as many different needs as possible. The first need is that of weight carrying. Some people who are less mobile find that they gain extra weight. We have equipment that will carry up to 32 stones in weight – enough to satisfy most people.
We also have many users who are left–handed. Some of our equipment is switchable from right– to left–handed use‚ and some us dual controlled. Power wheelchairs‚ too‚ can be converted fairly quickly to either hand.
People also have preferences as to manufacture and to configuration. Some people will be shopping from their scooters in larger stores‚ and need one that is only three–wheeled for extra manoeuvrability. Round half of our scooter fleet is three wheeled to help them. These also suit people who need a straighter leg position as they ride. Our manufacturer range‚ too‚ is as broad as we can make it‚ with Shopriders‚ Prides‚ and Rascals being well represented. More recently we have purchased from Horizon in Cornwall‚ and from Karelma in Europe.
This gives our users another benefit. Many people decide to buy equipment for themselves. They can come and try any of our equipment at any time and find out what suits them best before making a big outlay. This helps people to be as well informed as possible.
Pictured here are examples of the equipment we have available. If you have needs that you feel are under–represented‚ please let us know and we will try to accommodate them if we can.
